Dr. Archie Reed Jr. WINNSBORO – service of celebration of the Reverend Dr. Archie C. Reed’s life will be offered at Sion Presbyterian Church at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday July 9, 2014. A visitation for family and friends will be at Pope Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Reverend Dr. Archie C. Reed, Jr. was born on December 30, 1935 in Winnsboro, SC to the late Archie C. Reed and Corrie Bowen Reed. He departed this life on July 7, 2014 surrounded by his family at home. He is survived by loving and dedicated wife of 57 years, Maudalene Young Reed; four children Alan (Tracy) Reed of Charlotte, Lou Ann Reed of Charleston, Jimmy (Cindy) Reed of Greenwood, Steve (Teresa) Reed of Winnsboro; eight grandchildren, Megan O’Brien, Drayton Reed, Heather (Daniel) Stokes, Christopher Reed, Corrine Reed, Miranda Reed, Caroline Reed, and Leland Reed; and one great-grandchild Caitlynn Stokes; as well as one nephew, Riley McMaster Brice (Marti) and two nieces Janet Brice (David) Dees and Linda Brice (Sam) McGarr. He was predeceased by one sister, Barbara Jean (Riley) Brice of Alabama. Dr. Reed graduated from Mt. Zion Institute, Presbyterian College, and Columbia Theological Seminary. He received a Doctor of Ministry from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. Dr. Reed preached his first sermon at Simpson Chapel in Fairfield County in 1951when he was a junior in high school. He was ordained in 1960 and served Morningside Presbyterian Church in Camden, SC and Rowan Presbyterian Church in Lugoff, SC simultaneously for a number of years. Dr. Reed then served as a Head of the Chaplaincy Department at Cresson State School and Hospital in Pennsylvania where he worked with mentally disabled children. He then moved to Avon Park, Florida, where he served as chaplain at the Florida Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center. He returned to South Carolina in 1972 and worked as Director of Chaplaincy and Clinical Pastoral Education at Earle E. Morris, Jr. Alcohol and Drug Addictions Center. He also served as Director of the Department of Pastoral Services and Clinical Pastoral Education at Baptist Medical Center before going into private practice. Dr. Reed held numerous certifications including Chaplain Supervisor with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc, Diplomat in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, Fellow in the College of Chaplains of the American Protestant Health Association, Charter member of the Association of Sex Therapists and Counselors and certified sex therapist, Addictions Counselor of the SC Addictions Review Board, and Licensed Professional Counselor of SC. Dr. Reed continued to preach, serving local Presbyterian and ARP churches as a supply minister. He served his home church, Sion Presbyterian, as Parish Associate for Counseling for a number of years. He obtained the distinction of being the longest-serving supply pastor for the General Synod of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church having served New Hope ARP Church from 1972 – 2000. He retired from Trinity Presbytery, PC (USA) in 2004. He enjoyed his hobbies notably reading, amateur photography, classic cars and woodworking. Dr. Reed had a genuine love for his family and a deep desire to serve the Lord by helping people. The family requests that memorial gifts go to Sion Presbyterian Church, 116 W.
